What's on the Michigan Motorcycle Permit Test? Question Count & Topics (2026)
Michigan's Secretary of State (SOS) motorcycle knowledge test is 20 multiple-choice questions long, and I tell every new rider I work with that it's the easy part of getting on a bike legally. Pass it and the SOS hands you a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), which is your first real step toward getting the CY endorsement on your license. You need 16 correct to pass. That's an 80% score, same pass rate as the car test but with far fewer questions. Branch rules and details do change now and then, so I'd spend two minutes on Michigan.gov/SOS before you drive over to the branch.
How Many Questions Are on the Michigan Motorcycle Test?
The Michigan SOS motorcycle permit test is short. 20 questions total.
That's it.
You need 16 correct to pass. So you can miss up to 4 and still walk out with your Temporary Instruction Permit, or TIP. The test is multiple choice and it's required before the SOS will issue that TIP. No knowledge test, no permit. Simple as that.

What Score Do You Need to Pass?
Sixteen out of twenty is the number you're shooting for. That's the target.
Run the numbers and you'll see four wrong answers is all the room you get before it turns into a fail. Compare that with the Michigan car knowledge test, which is 50 questions at the same 80%, so on a bike you're doing a lot less reading but you still only get to miss one in five. That means every question counts for more on the motorcycle version (each one is worth 5% of your score, where on the car test it's 2%). Miss 5 and you fail.
In practice I want to see you hitting 18 or 19 out of 20 before you head to the branch, and honestly I'd rather you were getting a clean 20 than scraping by at 16. Nerves at the SOS counter usually knock a point or two off whatever you were scoring at your kitchen table, so build yourself that cushion. I have my riders work through the Michigan motorcycle manual and the practice tests side by side, because a wrong answer on a practice test tells you exactly which chapter of the manual you need to go back and reread.
What Topics Are on the Michigan Motorcycle Permit Test?
The questions come straight from the Michigan motorcycle manual. Not from YouTube. Not from your buddy who rides a Sportster. From the manual.
Expect questions on the gear you should be wearing and why it matters, on the bike's controls and the quick check you do before every ride, and on how to get moving, slow down and lean through a turn without getting into trouble. From there it moves on to lane positioning and making sure drivers can actually see you, then braking and swerving, the rules for riding with a group, and what to do when the road throws something at you, like a patch of gravel in a corner or a deer stepping out at dusk.
This one trips people up.
The manual is the source material. The SOS asks questions straight from the manual. Read it once. While you read, jot down a few notes on the controls and on where you sit in the lane, since that's where I see riders lose the most points. After that, let the practice tests show you where the holes are.
Group riding catches a lot of new riders off guard, mostly because they haven't ridden with anybody yet, so I'd give that part of the manual a real read instead of skimming it.

How the Test Leads to the CY Endorsement
Once you pass the Michigan motorcycle written test, the SOS gives you a Temporary Instruction Permit. You've got 180 days on it. While you're on the TIP you can't carry a passenger or ride after dark, and the freeway's off limits too, so no hopping on I-96 to get across town. You can practice on public roads within those limits.
The full CY endorsement also requires the on-cycle skills test. You can complete an approved rider safety course instead. Many riders in Lansing and Dearborn go the safety course route because it waives the skills test and can lower insurance. But the knowledge test is step one.
I'd use those 180 days well, quiet subdivision streets first and busier roads once your clutch work feels smooth. And if you haven't passed step one yet, the free Michigan motorcycle practice test is where I'd start.
How to Pass the Michigan Motorcycle Knowledge Test
Here's how I'd go about it if you're starting from zero.
Read the Michigan motorcycle manual. Then take practice tests. Lots of them.

Michigan motorcycle permit test questions cover lane positioning, braking, and cars that don't see you. Expect these on the real Michigan SOS motorcycle test. Missed questions are your study list. Review them. Take one more test. Then go back over the ones you got wrong one more time, because the same mistakes have a way of sneaking back in.
I'm a big believer in a little bit every day over one late-night cram the night before your branch visit. Most of my riders do fine with about ten minutes a day for a week. If lane positioning or braking keep costing you points, spend your next couple of sessions mostly on those two. I don't call anyone ready until they're getting 20 out of 20 in practice, and that's what I'd ask of you too.
Then go take the real Michigan SOS motorcycle test and get it done.

Up to 4. Number five is a fail, so I wouldn't plan on using all four.

At a Michigan Secretary of State branch office. Some third-party sites may also offer it. Check Michigan.gov/SOS for current locations. The SOS may require an appointment.
Beginner Questions About the Michigan Motorcycle Test
How long does the test take?
Most riders I send in are done somewhere between 15 and 25 minutes. It's twenty questions, so there's no reason to hurry through them. Time pressure makes you misread. Read every question twice.
What if I fail?
Yes, you can take it again. Waiting periods and fees can change, so look up what the SOS says right now before you head back. Review your missed topics between attempts. Focus on the manual before you retake.
Is it hard?
Not if you study. Riders who fail usually skip the manual and rely on common sense. Common sense doesn't cover Michigan Lefts or what to do on grooved pavement. The manual does.
Do I need the skills test too?
Yes, for the full CY endorsement. The knowledge test only gets you the TIP. After that you'll still have to pass the on-cycle skills test, or finish an approved safety course instead.
How many practice tests should I take?
Until you stop missing questions. For most people, that's 5 to 10 practice tests. Take a Michigan motorcycle practice test every day for a week and you'll be ready.
Start with the free mi motorcycle permit practice test, which runs the same 20-question setup you'll see at the branch. You find out right away which ones you missed and why, so you're not guessing about what to go back and study. Use it with the manual. The questions match the real Michigan SOS motorcycle test. Then go pass the real thing.
