How to Schedule a Washington Drive Test with the DOL (2026)

You don't schedule a Washington drive test by walking into a DOL office and asking for a road test. That's the first thing to know. The Washington Department of Licensing uses licensed driver training schools and testing businesses for almost all behind-the-wheel exams. A handful of DOL offices still offer them, but most people book through a school. It's a little confusing because the knowledge test for your permit is a separate thing entirely.

You need a valid Washington instruction permit first. No permit, no drive test. Once you have that, you find a tester. The DOL keeps a list on dol.wa.gov. Use that list. Unofficial sites charge extra to schedule washington driving test slots.

Who Gives the Drive Test in Washington?

The DOL authorizes private businesses to do this work. These are driving schools and independent testing companies. Some DOL offices still administer the drive test, but they're the exception now. If you live in Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, or Vancouver, you'll likely book with a school nearby.

The permit test is the knowledge exam. Multiple choice. Often taken on a computer. What most people call the washington dmv driving test is the behind-the-wheel part, where you're out on real streets with an examiner in the passenger seat watching how you handle the car, where your eyes go, and the calls you make at intersections and lane changes.

You can't take the wa driving test without a valid Washington instruction permit. No exceptions. If you're under 18, you also need proof of driver education and supervised practice hours. More on that below.

To find a tester, go to dol.wa.gov and search for licensed testing businesses. The list changes. I'd go straight to the DOL list for a washington state driver's license test location rather than trusting whatever pops up first in a search, since some of those ads aren't licensed testers at all.

How to Schedule Your WA Drive Test (Step by Step)

You can take Drivio's free washington dmv practice driving test at /washington before you book.

  1. Find a DOL-licensed testing business or driving school near you. Use dol.wa.gov.
  2. Choose the drive test option. Don't pick the knowledge test.
  3. Select a day and time. Some places book online. Some testers still book by phone.
  4. Confirm the tester's fee and required documents. Fees vary by tester.

This one trips people up. A site might look official but isn't. If it charges a "DOL scheduling fee," leave. The DOL doesn't set drive test fees. Each tester sets its own price. Book early. Around Puget Sound the openings go quickly, especially on Saturdays, so grab one when you see it. And hang on to the confirmation email or text, because if there's any mix-up at the check-in desk that's your proof you were booked.

When you call or book online, ask the tester a couple of questions up front about what the fee covers, whether a retest costs the same, and whether they want you there early for the vehicle check. Since each business sets its own price, the answers aren't the same everywhere, and it's better to know before you hand over a card.

What to Bring to Your Washington Drive Test

Bring your valid Washington instruction permit. Bring required identity documents if the tester asks. Some schools want to see the same proof you used for the permit.

If you're bringing your own car, it has to be registered, licensed and insured, and the examiner is going to walk around it checking that the lights, turn signals, brakes and seatbelts all actually work (I've seen a test end before it started over one dead blinker). The examiner checks these before you start. A bad brake light can stop your test.

If you're under 18 you'll also need proof that you finished driver education. Also bring the required supervised practice hours. The tester may check the log. The log must be in the car.

Check the current document and vehicle checklist on dol.wa.gov before you go, since the DOL does update it from time to time and you don't want to find that out at the counter.

How Long Is the Wait and How to Reschedule

Wait times vary. A testing business in Bellevue or Kent might be booked out three weeks. A smaller school in Spokane Valley or Federal Way might have openings next week. Summer is the worst. Everyone wants a license before school starts.

To cancel or reschedule, contact the tester directly. Not the DOL. The tester who booked you controls the calendar. If you miss the appointment, you'll probably pay again. And you'll wait for the next opening.

Check multiple nearby testing businesses. I've had students in Seattle find something a couple weeks sooner by calling schools out in Everett, Renton or Tacoma, and a 20-minute drive is a pretty good trade for that.

If you do have to move your test, do it as early as you can. Most testers are a lot more flexible when you give them a few days' notice than when you call the morning of, and a slot you hand back early might be the one somebody else on the waitlist has been hoping for.

How to Pass the WA Drive Test on Test Day

Examiners score these skills:

  • controlled stops
  • turns
  • lane changes
  • mirror and blind-spot checks
  • backing
  • parking
  • safe speed

They watch your head movement. If you don't turn your head to check a blind spot, they mark it. Even if your eyes moved.

Common failures include rolling stops, missed blind-spot checks, and wide turns. Rolling stops are brutal. The car must fully stop. Feel the weight shift back. Then go.

Practice the maneuvers in the area around the testing business. Many examiners use similar routes. Get comfortable with hills if you're testing in Seattle or Tacoma. Steep hill starts and downhill parking can show up.

Washington Drive Test FAQ

Where do I take the drive test in Washington? At a DOL-licensed driving school or testing business. A few DOL offices still offer it. Check dol.wa.gov.

How do I schedule it? Contact the testing business directly. Pick a date. Pay the tester's fee. Confirm your slot.

Do I need my own car? Not always. Many driving schools let you use their car for a fee. Ask when you book.

What vehicle requirements apply? The car needs current registration and insurance, and the lights, signals, brakes and seatbelts all have to be working. I'd also make sure there's no check-engine or other warning light glowing on the dash when you pull in.

How do I reschedule? Call or email the testing business you booked with as soon as you know, because if you cancel too close to the day some of them will still charge you.

First-Timer Questions About the WA Drive Test

How early should I arrive? I tell people to show up about 15 minutes before the appointment. Earlier than that and you're just sitting. Late means you might lose your slot.

What if my vehicle fails the pre-test safety check? You won't test. You'd have to book again and most likely pay the fee a second time, which is why I have students get a family member to stand behind the car the night before while they test the brake lights and both blinkers.

Can I use a driving school's car? Yes, many schools offer this. This is common in Seattle and Bellevue. Many students don't own a car. The fee is usually small.

How soon can I retake it if I fail? Washington doesn't have a long mandatory wait. But you need to rebook with the tester. Availability controls the timeline. Some people retake within a week.

What maneuvers are tested? Testers check:

  • stops
  • turns
  • lane changes
  • backing
  • parking
  • speed control

Maybe a parallel park. Maybe a three-point turn. Practice both.

The Washington DOL drive test isn't hard if you're prepared. But booking confuses some people. If you book with a licensed tester off the DOL list, show up with your permit and paperwork, and put in some real practice on stops, turns and parking, you'll be in good shape. And if you need to study, Drivio's free Washington practice tests at /washington are a good place to start.
