How Many Questions Are on the Michigan Driver's License Knowledge Test? (2026)

There are 50 questions on the Michigan SOS knowledge test, and every one of them is multiple choice. You must answer 40 correctly, or 80 percent. That is the number everyone wants to know before they even open the manual. The Michigan Secretary of State gives the test. Michigan has no DMV. On the driving license Michigan written test, each question has four choices. So you've got room for 10 wrong answers and you'd still walk out with a pass.

How Many Questions Are on the Michigan Knowledge Test?

You'll see 50 Michigan driver's license test questions. Plain and simple.

A lot of guides say the Michigan driving license test questions come in two halves, about 25 on road signs and 25 on traffic rules, and you need 80 percent overall (I'd still check the current setup on Michigan.gov/SOS before test day). The SOS can score the sections separately. You need the passing mark on each part. A strong traffic-rules score cannot offset a failed road-signs score.

Quick facts for the Michigan knowledge test:

  • Total questions: 50
  • Passing score: 80 percent
  • Correct answers needed: 40
  • Wrong answers allowed: 10

Road signs can look nearly identical. A divided highway sign and a two-way traffic sign are both yellow diamonds with arrows, and on the test you have to know which is which.

What's the Passing Score on the Michigan SOS Knowledge Test?

For the Michigan driving license written test you need 40 right out of 50. That is an 80 percent pass mark.

About 10 overall. But here is the catch. If your office scores road signs and traffic rules as two parts, you have to clear the mark on each one, so blowing a bunch of sign questions can sink you even if you nail every rules question.

I tell my students to keep practicing until they're getting more than 80 percent every time, not just once on a good night. Above it. Rushing can shave points off your score. You might misread a right-of-way question at a Grand Rapids roundabout or a Michigan Left on Telegraph Road.

What Topics Are on the Michigan Permit Test?

The Michigan "What Every Driver Must Know" manual supplies the questions. Any topic in that manual can appear.

The questions mostly cover signs, signals and pavement markings, who yields at intersections, crosswalks and roundabouts, and speed limits like the 75 mph limit on some rural freeways. You'll also get questions on:

  • Safe following distance and stopping distance in different weather conditions

Other topics include sharing the road and work zone laws. Impaired and distracted driving laws also appear. Michigan-specific penalties are tested. The June 30, 2023 hands-free law shows up now. So does the Move Over law for stopped emergency vehicles.

Road sign questions are a major component. They may be scored separately. Expect at least one sign question where the divided highway sign and the two-way traffic sign are both in the answer list. The screen makes similar signs look equally correct.

Read the official Michigan manual alongside your practice tests. A Michigan DMV practice test is good for finding gaps, but the questions come out of the manual, so read it too.

Who Takes the Michigan Knowledge Test (Teens vs. Adults)?

Teens take the knowledge test as part of Segment 1 driver education under Michigan's Graduated Driver Licensing system. That means you will take the test through your driver education provider, not on your own at the SOS office.

Adults 18 and older without a prior license take the same SOS knowledge test to earn a Temporary Instruction Permit. The TIP lets you practice driving with a licensed adult before taking the road skills test.

You'll take the test at a Secretary of State office. You book the visit online at Michigan.gov/SOS, and in busy places like Detroit, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids the open slots fill up fast, so I'd book as soon as you start studying.

The SOS changes its forms and ID list every so often, so pull up Michigan.gov/SOS a few days before your visit and see what papers they want.

How to Pass the Michigan Knowledge Test on Your First Try

Honestly, the students of mine who pass the first time just read the manual and then quiz themselves on it a lot.

Use this study plan:

  • Read Michigan's "What Every Driver Must Know" cover to cover, one section per day
  • Take repeated Michigan-specific practice tests that mirror the 50-question format

After each practice test, go back through the ones you got wrong and jot down why your answer was wrong, and put most of your extra time into road signs and right-of-way, because that's where my students lose the most points.

Short sessions work better than one long night. Twenty minutes a day for two weeks is about 14 sessions, and by the second week most people are getting the sign questions right without having to think.

I'd wait until you're scoring over 90 percent in practice before you book, because 80 in your kitchen can turn into 76 at the SOS counter. A cushion protects you from test-day nerves and tricky questions.

Use the driving license practice test Michigan page at Drivio's free Michigan practice test. Each one has 50 questions, same as the SOS test. Take it daily until answers feel automatic.

Michigan Knowledge Test FAQ

How many questions are on the Michigan permit test? The Michigan SOS knowledge test has 50 questions, and all of them are multiple choice.

What score do I need to pass? You need 80 percent. On a 50-question test that's 40 correct.

How many can I miss? You can miss 10 questions overall. You must still pass any separate road-signs section.

Is the road signs section separate? Most guides say 25 of the questions are road signs and 25 are traffic rules, with 80 percent needed overall, and some offices do grade the two parts on their own.

Are the questions multiple choice? Yes. Each question has four answer options. You can see the format in a free MI DMV practice test.

Do I need to take the test at a DMV? No. Michigan has no DMV. You take the test at a Secretary of State (SOS) office.

Beginner Questions About the Michigan SOS Written Test

How long does the test take? I've had students done in 20 minutes and others who took 40. You won't have a strict limit at most offices. If you hurry you can skip right past a word like "not" or "except" and pick the wrong answer.

What happens if I fail, and how soon can I retake it? Failing once isn't the end of it and you can come back. The SOS sets the waiting period and any retest fee, and those can change, so ask at the counter or look it up on Michigan.gov/SOS before you rebook. Use the time in between to go over the sections you missed.

Is the test hard? It is not hard if you study. The questions come directly from the manual. Some questions have two similar choices. When two answers both look okay, go with the one that matches what the Michigan manual actually says.

Do I need driver's ed first? If you're under 18, yes, because teens take this test through Segment 1 driver education. If you're 18 or older you can skip driver's ed and go straight to the SOS for your TIP, though a few practice tests first won't hurt.

How many practice tests should I take? I'd keep taking them until you get 90 percent or more a few times in a row. For most people, that means 10 to 15 full practice tests over two weeks. Drivio's free Michigan practice tests at /michigan make this easy.

Michigan roads have quirks. Michigan Lefts on divided roads in Warren and Sterling Heights confuse new drivers. Roundabouts in Grand Rapids suburbs show up on the test. Deer crossings in rural areas and the U.P. are fair game. Winter driving questions appear too. Black ice and snowplow spacing show up.

Use the Michigan SOS manual. Take the practice tests. Confirm details on Michigan.gov/SOS. You will pass.
