Yellow right lane ends sign warning drivers the right lane ends ahead

Lane Ends Sign (Right): Meaning, Shape, and DMV Test Tips

You see the sign and your brain has about one second to figure it out. That is how the permit test feels. The lane ends sign is one of those warnings that seems obvious when you are calm, but under time pressure it gets mixed up with other yellow diamonds. Two answers look right. One mentions merging. The other mentions the road narrowing.

I go over this one with my students early. Most of them have seen it a hundred times from the back seat and never thought about it. Then they're the driver, the right lane is running out, and there's a pickup next to them. Get over early and it's no big deal.

What Does the Lane Ends Sign Mean?

Here's the lane ends sign meaning without the fancy wording. Your lane is going away. On this version it's the right one. The right lane ends a short distance ahead. Not in a mile. Soon.

If you're the one in the right lane, you merge left, and you do it well before the pavement actually tapers away instead of riding it out to the very end. I'd skip the move where you floor it and hunt for some gap at the last second, because that's how fenders get bent. And if you're already over in the lane that continues, you're not off the hook either, since you're the one who has to make a little room. Let someone in. Cooperate rather than block them out.

That is the part a lot of drivers forget. The lane ends sign is not a challenge. Both lanes have a part in it.

The sign shows up before the taper does. Use that stretch to look around and pick your spot. Way better than finding out when the paint lines start bending under your tires.

What the Lane Ends Sign Looks Like

It is a yellow diamond. Black symbol. The roadway is shown narrowing as the right lane tapers off. One lane clearly comes to an end.

The symbol differs from the road-narrows both-sides shape. That one shows both edges squeezing in. This one shows a specific lane being cut off. One side bending in? Lane's dropping. Both sides? Whole road's getting skinnier.

Yellow just means warning, and a lot of signs are yellow. The black drawing inside is what does the real work. On the right lane ends sign you'll see two lanes drawn side by side, and the right-hand line kinks in toward the left until that lane just stops. The left line stays straight. You might also see a white or yellow word sign that says RIGHT LANE ENDS. Same message.

How to Merge When a Lane Ends

Mirror first, then turn your head. Cars sit in that blind spot more than you'd think. Start your merge early.

Get the blinker on while you've still got lane left, and drive at about the speed the left lane is going. Don't speed up to cut ahead late. It also fails the driving test.

The DMV wants to see a smooth, planned merge. Not a panic move.

Here's how I walk students through it on a real road. Sign, mirror, shoulder, blinker. Then find a gap that's already there. Don't try to make one. If traffic in the left lane is doing 45, you want to be doing about 45 too when you slide over. Going way slower makes it hard for anyone to let you in, and going way faster usually means you're trying to beat somebody, which is exactly the thing the sign is asking you not to do. If nobody's letting you in yet, ease off a little and try behind the next car. You've got more room than it feels like.

Lane Ends Sign vs Merge Sign

A lane ends merge left sign isn't a merge sign.

Lane ends: your travel lane stops ahead. Merge means another road joins yours. The difference matters. Lane ends forces you to move over. Merge means you are gaining traffic from the side.

DMV items test a lane ending vs roads combining. A tapering lane in the picture means lane ends. Two roadways coming together means a merge sign.

Look for the black symbol. The yellow diamond alone won't identify it.

A merge sign usually looks like one straight road with a second, curved line joining it from the side, kind of like a ramp coming in. Nothing about your own lane changes. You keep going and watch for cars entering. With lane ends, it's your lane that's going away, so the job of moving over lands on you. Mixing those two up on the permit test is super common, and I get why, they're both yellow and both about lanes. Just ask yourself whether the picture shows a lane disappearing or a road showing up.

Where the Lane Ends Sign Is Used

Highways dropping from two lanes to one. That is the classic spot.

Work zones closing a lane. You'll see it near orange cones.

Also after a short widening, like a passing lane out on a two-lane country road that ends after a mile or so.

Areas needing advance merge notice. The sign gives you time to adjust before the physical lane disappears.

And on plain city streets. Sometimes there's an extra lane for a block by a strip mall and then it's gone. New drivers miss those because it's slow and they relax. Same rules though.

DMV Test Tips for the Lane Ends Sign

Cue: one lane tapers and ends on the sign. That is your visual trigger.

Means merge into the open lane early. Not at the last cone.

Cooperate. Take turns. If an answer choice says to speed up and get ahead before the lane ends, cross it off. I've never seen that be the right one.

People mix it up with merge and road narrows all the time. Look at the symbol again. One lane dies.

My study tip is to not just learn the name. Imagine you're in that right lane with somebody beside you. What do you do? Check, signal, match speed, get over early. On the road test the examiner wants to see that. They also notice if you let people in when you're the one in the left lane.

Lane Ends Sign FAQ

What does a lane ends sign mean? It means the lane you're in, the right one on this version, is going to stop a short way up the road, so you'll have to merge left into the lane that keeps going before yours runs out.

What should you do when you see a right lane ends sign? Take a look in your mirror, turn your head for the blind spot, then put your signal on and get over to the left while there's still plenty of lane left under you.

Is a lane ends sign the same as a merge sign? No. Lane ends means your lane terminates. A merge sign means another road joins yours.

What is the shape of a lane ends sign? You'll see a yellow diamond with a black drawing of two lanes, where the right line bends in until that lane's gone.

Can you speed up to pass cars before the lane ends? No. That is unsafe and often marked as a testing error. Merge early and match speed.

Where are lane ends signs commonly placed?

  • On highways dropping a lane
  • In work zones
  • Where passing lanes end

Does the lane ends sign apply to both lanes? It warns the ending lane to merge. The continuing lane should allow space for that merge.

One tiny detail that saves people on test day: the word "must" appears in the correct answer for lane ends questions. Not "may." You must merge. The test uses that word on purpose. If you see "may merge when convenient," that is the wrong answer.
